Cars & Architecture

No other invention has changed the face of Switzerland like the automobile. The new mobility of the last century gave rise not only to streets and urban areas, but also to buildings entirely dedicated to the automobile: large parking garages in the cities, motels in holiday locations and apartment buildings with underground garages.

With a unique exhibition of photographs and vehicles, the Classic Center Switzerland told the story of automobile-inspired architecture between 9 February and 30 June 2018. Advertising posters featuring vehicles and buildings were also displayed. Visitors were able to take an architectural trip through Switzerland from the late 1920s up to the early 1980s – tracking the almost boundless enthusiasm for cars and construction made of steel, concrete and glass, along with the desire to bring the new mass mobility into harmony with the image of a traditional homeland.
